How to add an AI assistant to WhatsApp Business
The official way to add an AI assistant that knows your products to WhatsApp Business is to connect your business line to Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform. The greeting message, away message and quick replies in the WhatsApp Business app on your phone are fixed texts written in advance; they don't produce an answer from your catalog based on the customer's question. Since 15 January 2026, Meta no longer allows general-purpose AI bots that chat about anything on this platform. An assistant that serves a company's own customers on matters of its own business is allowed.
The app or the platform
WhatsApp has two sides for businesses:
- The WhatsApp Business app. It's installed on a phone. It offers tools such as a catalog, labels, greeting and away messages, and quick replies. For a business that gets few messages and writes its own replies, it's enough, and you don't need an assistant.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform. This is how a line gets connected to software. An AI assistant, a customer service panel, order notifications: every kind of automation runs through this platform. Connecting a line to it goes through Meta's own approval steps.
Routes outside the official platform (unofficial tools that imitate the app on your phone) carry the risk of the line being shut down. Don't put the number your customers reach you on at that risk.
Meta's 2026 rule: which assistants are allowed
In October 2025, Meta changed the terms of use of the WhatsApp Business Platform. Since 15 January 2026, the platform has been closed to services whose main function is offering a general-purpose AI assistant. Bots like ChatGPT or Perplexity that chat about anything fall under this.
What's allowed is a business using AI as a support tool to serve its own customers: product questions, order status, appointments, support requests. According to Meta, the platform exists for businesses to provide customer support and send relevant notifications.
In practical terms, the assistant has to stay tied to your business. If someone asks it for homework, code or general chat, it should say briefly that it won't answer and bring the conversation back to your business. The advisor on our own site works this way too.
Who charges for messages
On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges the fees, and they are separate from the setup cost. As stated on Meta's page (September 2026), the charge applies when template messages the company sends are delivered. Non-template replies inside the customer service window, which opens when a customer writes to you, are free.
Most of an AI assistant's work happens inside this window: the customer asks, the assistant answers. Messages the company starts, such as campaigns or reminders, fall under Meta's approved-template rules. Meta sets its rates by country and message type and updates them from time to time; the current version is on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page.
What to expect from the assistant
- Knowing your products. Its knowledge is your catalog, data sheets, dimension tables and frequent questions. When a customer gives a size or capacity, it lists the models that fit and explains why each one fits.
- Speaking the customer's language. Turkish, English and any other language you add.
- Not making things up. If price, stock and delivery time aren't connected to your systems, it doesn't state them. It passes the question to you along with the customer's contact details.
- Using the same knowledge as your site chat. Update a data sheet and the site window and the WhatsApp line both update at once.
The real question: is the answer right
A wrong answer on WhatsApp costs more than one on your site. The customer keeps the message, takes a screenshot and places the order based on it.
The assistant we build answers only from your documents. It records which document each answer rests on. When your documents don't cover a question, it says it doesn't know and passes the question to you.
We tested the same approach where a wrong answer is most expensive: law. Our real-estate law advisor, Geolex, was built on 7,500+ legal records, 46 statutes and 172 court rulings and cites the relevant article in every answer.
If you build it with us
- Gathering the documents is our job. Catalog, data sheets, dimension tables, FAQs, past correspondence if there is any. It's fine if they're scattered.
- We go through the platform steps with you. Connecting your line to the WhatsApp Business Platform goes through Meta's approval steps. We work through those steps together with you.
- It doesn't go live until it passes the test. The questions your customers really ask, and the answers you give them, become a test list. The assistant isn't connected to your line until it passes that list.
- We read the first week's conversations together. Gaps get closed in that round. After that, you can see the log of what gets asked yourself.
- You choose where your data goes. Your documents live on your own server. In a cloud setup, only the passages relevant to a question go to the AI provider to produce the answer, and they aren't used for training. If you prefer, the model runs on your server too.
- One place to update. Your site and WhatsApp run on the same knowledge.
What determines the price
There are two separate items: the setup and Meta's message fees. Meta sets the message fees. The main things that shape the setup cost:
- How scattered the information is. One tidy catalog and hundreds of PDF data sheets and spreadsheets are not the same job.
- Number of languages. Each language means passing the test list in that language too.
- Number of channels. WhatsApp alone, or WhatsApp plus your site.
- Live data connections. If price and stock are to be read live from your software, connecting to that software is a separate piece of work.
- Upkeep after launch. How often your catalog changes, and who will do the updates.
That's why, instead of a fixed price list, we work out the scope with you by looking at your documents.
Common questions
What if a customer wants to talk to a person?
The assistant passes the question and the customer's contact details to you. Your team takes over the conversation.
Does the assistant message customers on its own?
No. It replies when a customer writes. Messages the company starts, such as campaigns or reminders, fall under Meta's approved-template rules and are a separate piece of work.
Does Meta's ban affect our assistant?
Not if the assistant helps your customers with your products and services. The ban covers services that use WhatsApp as a distribution channel for a general-purpose chatbot.
Which languages does it speak?
Turkish, English and any other language you add. Each language is tested separately.
